The pristine Victorian cottage with lacy white fretwork, large windows, and a shady porch is the only one of Sam Brannan's 1860 resort cottages still standing on its original site. Each room has individual touches such as a four-poster bed, a claw-foot tub, or a velvet settee.

Unfortunately, I had to cancel my reservations because of a sudden family emergency. When I called to cancel, I was told that there would be a charge (even though I'm cancelling 1-month ahead) and the woman asked me what the family emergency was. I told her it was a death in the family and all she gave me was an "oh." For goodness sake, have some tact.
