Tucked into the foothills and surrounded by flowering gardens, this special-occasion restaurant, a favorite among locals hosting out-of-town visitors, provides an alternative to the chile-laden dishes of most Southwestern nouvelle cuisine. Wild-mushroom bisque, pecan-grilled buffalo, and pan-seared sea bass are among the menu choices. Tapas (and most items on the full menu) can be enjoyed on the more casual outdoor patio, accented by live Flamenco guitar music. The lavish Sunday brunch buffet is worth a splurge.

Very good but not great

The atmosphere at The Grill cannot be beat. It's a very beautiful restaurant, and people who aren't familiar with the desert should see how lovely the Tucson desert can be. That said, I was mildly disappointed in my experience. The others in my party loved their food, but my pork was overcooked and tough. The risotto was very good, but tough pork is hard to ignore. The berries on the creme brulee stuck to the caramelized sugar, so all the crispy goodness on top came off in one big piece, thus ruining the joy of eating the crisp sugar with the creamy custard. I would have sent this dessert back, but the server never came back by until it was check time. I will try this restaurant again, but only after I sample a few more fine-dining restaurants in Tucson.RATING: 3.4

Perfect Romantic Setting

I lived in Tucson for over a decade before finally discovering this sensual masterpiece. The food is spectacular, and the restuarant is set on a beautiful tree-covered bluff overlooking the lights of Tucson. Really magnificent. Atmoshpere in the dining room is authentic southwest without the schtick so common in local area restaurants--and the service is thoroughly professional. A great choice in a market that seems to specialize in good restaurants with at least one glaring weakness.RATING: 5.0
