The tranquil dining room in this Greek spot off 4th Avenue is furnished with lace curtains, white stucco walls, and potted plants. Enjoy classics like kotopoulo stin pita (grilled chicken breast with a yogurt-cucumber sauce on fresh pita), moussaka, or the pastitsio (a casserole made with pasta, meat, and béchamel). The house favorite is braised lamb shoulder in a light tomato sauce over pasta or potatoes—call to reserve your order of the lamb ahead of time.

    WOW... this place is tragic... It started off alright with a decent appetizer and a not so good bottle of wine, and the service being not exactly professional. Then we received our entrées... my salmon which was supposed to have a white wine reduction has some sort of sweet red sauce, and upon trying the rice it was grossly undercooked. Needles to say I sent it back for cooked rice. It was brought back to the table STILL crunchy. Meanwhile my business associate had some terrible travesty that involved pasta and fish... The sauce had badly separated... the way sauce does when its old and microwaved, and the fish was slimy, rubbery, and completely inedible. When the waitress was bringing back my dish , he told her that he did not care for his meal and she promptly argued with him that it was fine and that is how it was supposed to be, then stated that she would get the owner.
    From there pretty much the entire staff proceeded to discuss how to handle the situation loudly enough that we, as well as the rest on the patrons, could hear it easily from across the dinning room, apparently he did not want to come out and talk to us. Then our waitress came back and informed us that they would be taking the entrées off our bill and we were about to say that it was fine when the owner came rushing up, loudly telling us that "We don't serve garbage"... he repeated it all the way until he was in the face of my associate. Then some young woman from who knows where grabbed my shoulder and proceeded to hack up my salmon (which I had yet to try) and said that it was perfectly cooked... Obviously the waitress had not been listening when I said the RICE was undercooked! At that point we were ready to pay for our apps and wine and leave, but the situation escalated with the owner practically yelling and then the young woman suddenly shouted that we were just white trash looking for a free meal... I have never been so insulted in my life! Being business owners ourselves ( myself in fine dinning desserts) we have never seen such appalling behavior from a service industry, especially the food industry.

    New Years Eve, A Night To Remember

    It was New Year's Eve and a group of us had reservations for dinner at 8:00 at Athens. Our group of 10 people all arrived within a few minutes of each other and were told our table was not ready yet. There was another large group that was still eating their entrees, and it soon became apparent that was the table reserved for us. At some point we were steered towards the bar to wait for our table. There was only room for 2 of us to sit, so we all huddled to the side waiting for our table. My husband and I were handed a drink menu when we indicated we would like a glass of wine while we were waiting. That person then disappeared and there was no one at the bar for 20 minutes to take our drink order. We were still waiting for our table, and apparently that was the only table that was going to be available to us. After we had waited for 1 hour, the group finally vacated "our table". I have no idea why they did not push two other tables together as others vacated. During our wait we were not given any bread or asked if we wanted an appetizer and other than the one drink order we were virtually ignored. So, now our table was vacated but it just sat there with nobody coming over to clear it. It was that way for 10 minutes! Finally it was cleared and we were seated. As we were looking at our menus, a waitress spilled a glass of water on two members of our party. Our waitress finally came by to take drink orders. Another 15 minutes go by before she comes back to take appetizer orders. Finally she comes back to take our dinner order. Still no bread. About 10 minutes after she had taken our dinner order, she came back to tell 2 of our group that they were out of lamb. We were finally given food at 10:20 which was 2 hours and 20 minutes after our reservation time. They had run out of potatoes, so when the plates came everyone who had ordered potatoes had rice on their plates. Surprise! About 10 minutes later the bread came. In the middle of eating my dinner, a waitress bumped into me so hard my chair moved sideways. At least she apologized. Several people wanted rice pudding for their dessert, but they were out of that too. It was 11:30 by the time we left. OK, I know it was New Years Eve and places are busy, but the restaurant knew that too! There was not enough staff to properly serve the customers, and they ran out of several items on the menu. I understand that they might have run out of lamb, but good grief, they ran out of potatoes! It shoud not have taken almost 2 1/2 hours after our reservation time to get any food. They should at least comped us a drink given us some bread, or apologized profusely. None of these things happened. Most people seemed to like the food, but nobody seemed to love their dish. Mine was too salty. If not for the wonderful friends I was with, the evening would have been a disaster. Thank goodness we didn't have tickets for a play. My advice is to try it if you just have to have Greek food, but you'd better not be in a hurry. As for me, there are plenty of other better restaurants where I can spend my money.

    Service dropped with new ownership!

    Food is tasty, but the service has definietely dropped with the new ownership this summer. I had always enjoyed eating at Athens in the past, and frequented regularly. The new owner, however, has forgotten that service means providing the customers with what the customer wants, not what the owner wants to push on the customer. On my most recent visit I did not desire to have any wine with my meal. I still had a workout to attend later that evening. After I said no thank you to any wine to the waiter, the new owner took it upon himself to come over to the table and offer wine ( or rather push) to me three separate times. I know what I want, not him. The ought to listen to their customers. It is annoying to keep pushing somehting you don't want - like a telephone solicitor who calls back three times to sell you something. As if that was not annoying enough. As I was leaving the resturant the new owner blocked me at the exit to lecture me about how I needed some wine with my dinner. He stated hesaw how I loostened my tie and next time to take the whole tie off and I needed some wine to help me relax. He lectured me about he always makes it a practice to have two glases of wine with lunch and two with dinner. I had to push myself out the door. There won't be another visit to Athens. I am sorry the service changed so abruptly with the recent change in ownership. In the past I thoroughly enjoyed and looked forward to dining at Athens.
