Sonoita Creek State Natural Area

Sonoita Creek State Natural Area Review

Arizona State Parks has designated almost 5,000 acres surrounding Patagonia Lake as Sonoita Creek State Natural Area. This project, funded by the Arizona State Parks Heritage Fund (lottery monies) and the State Lake Improvement Fund, offers environmental educational programs and university-level research opportunities, as well as camping facilities. The riparian area is home to giant cottonwoods, willows, sycamores, and mesquites; nesting black hawks; and endangered species. Rangers offer guided birding tours, by boat and on foot, for an additional small fee every Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday at 9, 10:15, and 11:30 am (call to confirm schedule). The entrance fee is good for both Patagonia Lake State Park and the Sonoita Creek State Natural Area.
