What to Do and Where to Do It

Recreation in Cochise County centers on historic and natural treasures. History buffs can walk the streets of the Old West in Tombstone, revisit the infamous shootout at the OK Corral, and peek into the "birdcages" of a historic brothel. For a look at the mineral wealth that built Bisbee, take a tour of the Copper Queen Mine and visit the historic sights in this two-canyon town. Natural beauty and some of the best birding in the world draw flocks of visitors to southeastern Arizona's "Sky Islands," Coronado National Forest, and Chiricahua National Monument. Military might takes center stage at the remote ruins found at the Fort Bowie National Historic Site and at the active outpost of historic Fort Huachuca. However, in the southwestern portion of the state the major sights are few and far between. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is worth the trip if you have a day to spare. If you're out this way, you may also want to visit the revitalized downtown district and historic highlights in Yuma.
