Growth in Phoenix over the past two decades has meant the emergence of a "real" downtown, where people hang out: there are new apartments and loft spaces, cultural and sports facilities -- including Chase Field (formerly known as Bank One Ballpark and still affectionately referred to as BOB) and the US Airways Center, and large areas for conventions and trade shows. It's retained a mix of past and present, too, and restored homes in Heritage Square, from the original town site, give an idea of how far the city has come since its inception around the turn of the 20th century. Downtown and the surrounding Central Phoenix area is home to some of the Valley's major museums and performance venues.
