    American Improv Culture

On August 30th, 2012, I went to see the Sudden Impact Comedy (SIC) show at Basha High School. American Improv is a relatively unknown culture to most people. The show “Whose Line is it Anyway?” captures the culture very well, and the students on the SIC team did an excellent job of capturing and keeping the audience’s attention.
Upon entering, audience members are greeted and given a ‘pamphlet,’ which has each of the team members’ names, and two lists of potential improve games that could be played that evening. The show is family-friendly and appropriate for children of all ages, with the threat of being “brown bagged” looming over the heads of both players and audience members. Upon saying anything lewd, crude, or just plain old lame, the offender has a brown paper sack placed over their head for the remainder of the game.
Each team is comprised of 3 players, with the possibility of bringing in the DJ as an extra player. Also parts of the night are the Referee and The Voice. The Referee is responsible for explaining each game, awarding points, and “brown bagging” anyone that is offensive. The Voice is the narrator, scorekeeper, and in no way takes part in the games.
Overall, the evening at the Sudden Impact Comedy show was very enjoyable, kid-friendly, and easy on the wallet.
