Petrified Forest National Park Travel Guide

Park Essentials

Accessibility

The visitor center, museum, and overlooks on the scenic drive are wheelchair accessible. All trails are paved, and all are accessible except Blue Mesa, which is very steep.

Park Fees and Permits

Entrance fees are $10 per car for seven consecutive days or $5 per person on foot, bicycle, motorcycle, or bus. Backcountry hiking and camping permits are free (limit of 15 days) at the Painted Desert Visitor Center or the Rainbow Forest Museum before 4 pm.

Park Hours

It’s a good idea to call ahead or check the website, since the park's hours vary so much; as a rule of thumb, the park is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and keep in mind that the area does not observe daylight savings time. Hours are approximately: 8–5 from November to February, daily 7–6:30 in March and April, daily 7 am–7:30 pm from May to August, and daily 7–6 in September and October.
