Navajo Nation West
The Hopi Reservation is like a doughnut hole surrounded by the Navajo Nation. If you approach the Grand Canyon from U.S. 89, via Flagstaff, north of the Wupatki National Monument, you'll find two significant sites in the western portions of the Navajo Reservation, the Cameron Trading Post and Tuba City (which also partly occupies Hopi land). Situated 45 miles west of the Hopi town of Hotevilla, Tuba City is a good stopover if you're traveling east to the Hopi Mesas or northeast to Page.
At Cameron, a turnoff point for the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, the Cameron Trading Post was built in 1916 and commemorates Ralph Cameron, a pre-statehood territorial-legislative delegate. The sheer walls of the Little Colorado River canyon about 10 miles west of U.S. 89 along AZ 64 are quite impressive, and also worth a stop.
