Fodor's Expert Review Reed's Lodge

514 E. Main St., Springerville, Arizona, 85938, USA

This is an older motel but a town favorite, thanks to the helpful staff and a handful of perks such as free bikes to borrow and use of a rec room with pool table, video games, and a pinball machine, as well as coffee, tea, cocoa, or cider every morning. The rooms of this mostly single-story lodge have Western accents such as knotty-pine paneling and Navajo-print bedspreads. Proprietor Roxanne Knight doubles as the finest concierge in the area, and she will arrange visits for guests on a working (not dude) ranch, cattle drives, horseback adventures, four-wheel-drive tours, wildlife- and petroglyph-viewing trips, and fossil-hunting expeditions. The on-site K5 Adventures & Gallery carries wares created by White Mountains artists and local craftspeople, and the gallery teems with Western-themed paintings, books on local history, wildlife, cowboy poetry, and even John Wayne paper dolls.
