Shuyak Island State Park
Shuyak Island State Park Review
The 46,000-acre Shuyak Island State Park is one of the most remote and overlooked units in the state parks system. Located at the northern end of the Kodiak Archipelago, it is accessible only by plane or boat. Its rugged outer coastline is balanced by a more protected system of interconnected bays, channels, and passages that make the park a favorite with sea kayakers. It also has excellent wildlife-viewing, especially of seabirds and sea mammals, and top-notch sportfishing for salmon. Wildlife ranges from Sitka black-tailed deer and brown bears to sea otters, sea lions, bald eagles, puffins, and whales. The park has four public-use cabins but no developed campgrounds; limited hiking trails pass through old-growth coastal rain forest.
