King Eider Hotel

1752 Ahkovak St., Barrow, Alaska, 99723, USA

Comfortable, dormitory-style lodging at the airport, at the remote reaches of civilization, are in simple, pine log, furnished rooms that share bathrooms down the hall. While there is no restaurant on the premises, coupons can be arranged to eat at the cafeteria of the local fish processing plant, where the food is a lot better than you might expect. The only other option is do-it-yourself from the grocery store. Although it was expanded in 2006, the hotel still sometimes fills up with large tour groups; be sure to make reservations before arriving on St. Paul.

PROS

  • clean and very well cared for, and the only game in town

CONS

  • rooms are pretty bare-bones for the price
  • a lot of rooms share just a couple of bathrooms
