Copper River Delta. Spring migration to the Copper River Delta provides some of the finest avian spectacles in the world. Species include the western sandpiper, American dipper, orange-crowned warbler, and short-billed dowitcher. Trumpeter swans and dusky Canada geese can also be viewed. Cordova, AK.

Copper River Delta Shorebird Festival. The arrival of as many as five million birds in the Copper River Delta each May is cause for five days of festivities during the first week of the month that include workshops and guided field trips. The birds, mostly western sandpipers and dunlins, feed and rest here on their long migration to their northern nesting grounds. Cordova, AK. 907/424–7260.

Cordova Air Service. The service conducts aerial tours of Prince William Sound on planes with wheels or floats. Cordova, AK. 907/424–3289.

Riverside Inn & Airboat Tours. Lifelong Alaskans Jack and Cherrie Stevenson own the only permitted Cordova outfitter currently taking visitors to Childs Glacier. A truly amazing experience, the trips take place aboard an airboat big enough to haul a van and 15 passengers across the raging Copper River. You get yourself to Mile 36, and Riverside will transport you the rest of the way to the glacier, where you can spend a day hiking the area's many trails or just staring at ice that soars 300 feet high. The Stevensons also rent out a two-bedroom apartment ($150) that's ideal for families or groups—clean your fish, dry your socks, and sit back relax after a long day of fishing or traipsing around the glacier. This accommodation has a full kitchen, a living room, laundry facilities, and a deck with views of the Eyak River and the rock walls across the way. Cordova, AK, 99574. 907/424–7135. Tours $150 per person, 4-person minimum.
