Most visitors to South Central start and end their visits in Anchorage, the region's transportation hub. From here you can branch out by car, bus, train, scheduled airline, or chartered plane to sample the area's varied attractions. South Central Alaska can be broken down into three general subregions—the towns and bays of Prince William Sound, communities south of Anchorage on the Kenai Peninsula, and communities north of Anchorage in the Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Valley and beyond. The region is ideal for exploring by boat, train, car, RV, or plane. All but a couple of the coastal communities are on the road system. For the most part, roads have two lanes and are paved. Traffic, especially on the Kenai Peninsula, can be frustrating on summer weekends, so allow plenty of time; better yet. Be wary of impatient drivers passing in inappropriate places—this is a perpetual problem on Alaska's rudimentary road system.
