Making the Most of Your Time

If You Have 3 Days

Head for the Kenai Fjords National Park. Take the Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm. Stop for lunch at the Bake Shop in Girdwood, then head to Portage Glacier. Continue south to Seward, visit the SeaLife Center or Exit Glacier. Day 2 is reserved for a Kenai Fjords tour. Spend another night, then head up to Cooper Landing for a half-day rafting or fishing trip on the Kenai River. Spend the night in Cooper Landing, or head to Hope.

If You Have 5 Days

Follow the three-day trip, then head back through Anchorage. Head for Talkeetna and a flightseeing tour of Denali State Park. Spring for a glacier landing. Spend the night, then head back south, taking the Fishhook-Willow Pass road turnoff at Mile 71.2 over Hatcher Pass. On the way down, stop at the Independence Mine near Palmer, then Hatcher Pass Lodge for lunch. Continue to Glenn Highway for a stop at the Musk Ox Farm or the Iditarod Headquarters in Wasilla.

If You Have 7 Days

From the Glenn Highway, turn left toward Valdez. Stop for a short hike at Thompson Pass. In Valdez, take a rafting or kayaking trip. Spend the night, then catch the ferry to Whittier. From Whittier, go through the tunnel to Seward Highway and head back to Anchorage.
