Media in Inside Passage

Newspaper

Juneau has one daily newspaper, two local television stations, and eight radio stations offering a wide range of music, news, and talk. The much-read Juneau Empire (www.juneauempire.com)keeps tabs on state politics, business, sports, and local news for the greater capital region.

Radio

Most of the local radio stations are owned by ABC Radio Networks, Alaska Broadcast Communications, or Alaska Juneau Communications. KJUD—channel 8 on the television dial—is the local ABC affiliate, while KTOO (channel 3) boasts a full schedule of public broadcasting.

On the AM-radio dial, KJNO 630 AM offers mostly conservative syndicated talk shows, while KINY 800 AM carries a mix of adult contemporary music and local news.

On the FM side, public radio can be found at KTOO 104.3 FM, while KTKU 105.1 FM features country, KFMG 100.7 FM plays contemporary pop, KRNN 102.7 FM focuses on adult contemporary music, and KSUP 106.3 offers a mix of today's hard rock.

AlaskaPass tips

The AlaskaPass allows unlimited travel on ferry and rail lines in Alaska, along with vehicle and ferry travel in British Columbia and the Yukon. Passes are available for 15 consecutive days of travel ($879), or for eight days of travel in a 12-day period ($749) or 12 days of travel in a 21-day period ($899). There is a $75 booking fee. Most travelers book their entire itinerary in advance; if you don't have a car, there is usually room on ferries for those without prebookings (206/463-6550 or 800/248-7598 www.alaskapass.com).
