By Car in Inside Passage

Only Skagway and Haines, in the northern Panhandle, and tiny Hyder, just across the border from Stewart, British Columbia, are accessible by conventional highway. Caution should always be exercised when driving these northern highways, as wildlife and weather are unpredictable hazards. Remember to bring your passport, too, as travelers are now required to show them at border crossings between the United States and Canada.

To reach Skagway or Haines, take the Alaska Highway to the Canadian Yukon's Whitehorse or Haines Junction, respectively, and then drive the Klondike Highway or Haines Highway southwest to the Alaska Panhandle. You can reach Hyder on British Columbia's Cassiar Highway, which can be reached, in turn, from Highway 16 just north of Prince Rupert.
