On an island 1 mi from town, Burgess Bauder (a local veterinarian and loveable curmudgeon) rents out his 1,600-square-foot four-story lighthouse, which was hand-built in the 1980s with coastal woods and a light at the top installed to Coast Guard specifications. The lighthouse can accommodate eight people in four rooms ($200 for four, plus $35 per person for extra guests)—you must rent the whole property. The price includes motorboat transportation to and from the island; it's $35 per day extra for use of the hot tub, which is only available when Burgess feels like going to the trouble. The Ritz Carlton it isn't but the views are unmatched, and laid-back visitors who don't care how old the carpet is have the time of their lives. Call up to a year ahead for midsummer reservations.
