Stately clapboard homes stand against a mountain backdrop on the sloping parade grounds of Alaska's first U.S. army post. As you enter you'll soon see the gallant, white-columned former commanding officer's quarters, now part of the Hotel Halsingland. Circle the parade ground if you like, passing the other homes along Officers Row. On the parade ground's south side at Alaska Indian Arts , you can watch artists at work. The Haines Convention and Visitors
Bureau has a walking-tour brochure of the fort.
