Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is 6 mi from downtown Anchorage on International Airport Road. It is served by Air Canada, Alaska, America West, American, Continental, Delta, Frontier Airlines, Northwest, Sun Country, U.S. Airways, and United Airlines, along with a number of international carriers. Several carriers, including ERA, Frontier Flying Service and PenAir, connect Anchorage with smaller Alaskan communities. Floatplane operators and helicopters serve the area from Lake Hood, which is adjacent to and part of Anchorage International Airport. A number of smaller air taxis and air-charter operations are at Merrill Field, 2 mi east of downtown on 5th Avenue.

A major redevelopment project at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport has brought a new air terminal and Alaska Railroad station with direct service to downtown.
