This roadhouse near the Malahat summit, about 30 minutes north of Victoria, doesn't look like much from the highway, but inside, the view over Finlayson Arm and the Gulf Islands is magnificent. The scenery is especially striking from the large outdoor deck, perched 600 feet (183 meters) over the Saanich Inlet. The lunch menu lists such casual fare as burgers, wraps, some incongruous Tex-Mex items, and hefty hot sandwiches; dinner brings straightforward pasta, seafood, and meat dishes. Brunch is served on Sunday. If you can't tear yourself away from the scenery, consider a room at the 10-room inn next door; it's run by the same people ($$$-$$$$).
