Fodor's Review:

Built by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1929 for the convenience of passengers using nearby Union Station, this majestic hotel has a classic lobby from the year it was constructed, including travertine walls and columns. Self-check-in kiosks in the lobby are a handy tool for the frequent guest or anybody in a rush. Guest rooms are formal without being stuffy. Comfy beds have ruffled pillows, thick comforters, and classic arched wood headboards. The Elizabeth Milan spa offers exceptional treatments, like massage for two in what was once a bank vault, rose-petal baths, and other unique experiences. The signature restaurant, Epic, has the city's best Canadian whole lobster (either butter-poached, steamed, grilled, or roasted), and still serves high tea from 2 until 4 in the afternoons. The snug Library Bar just might have Toronto's best martinis. Pros: a terrific multipurpose grand hotel, adept at handling large and complex conferences, royalty stays here. Cons: Some older guest rooms and baths may be smaller than those in newer hotels, some rooms need redecorating, Wi-Fi unreliable in public areas.

Hi folks..Just thought I'd mention that I spent 6 nights @ The Royal York this last Aug. My wife and 3 Kids.. It was Greaat for us. I spoiled the kids with room service deserts after their regular bedtime/ good TV. It was the best Shrimp cocktail I've ever had also. We had a nice view and the greatest thing was to be within range of many attractions. The Hippo Bus tour was great to do firstly. The guide filled us in on much of the historical buildings. The HippoBus (its amphibious) tour also gave us a voucher for 20% off a fine diner across the street. Nice shops in the lobby. Scooped some Amber for the wife. The salesperson was well learned with the aspects of Amber. Good thing the rooms are A/C too. I didn't know, prior, that the Hotel is a favourite for moviemakers and celebs. The hotel is also flush with Masonic History. Motif and designs. I'll be staying there again. Thanks Fairmont. ;)

We were just there during the Toronto Film Festival. That hotel is badly in need of a make-over. The room was small, the bathroom wall paper was mildewed and looked like something from the 1920's... not a replica but the original! Not to mention they need to get with the program on decent beds and bedding. The beds were hard as a rock. I would expect this kind of room from a Budget hotel... not a grande dame such as this!
