Oka

If you like apples and delicious cheese, Oka is sure to be a highlight of your trip. It was once the home of Cistercian monks, but the urban sprawl has driven them from their abbey, on the shores of Lac des Deux-Montagnes, to seek solace farther north in St-Jean-de-Matha in the Lanaudière region, but the cheese they made famous is still produced by a private firm here and is available in local shops. The rolling hills around the little town of Oka are where you'll find many of the apple orchards. If you love cider, follow the Route des Vergers, stopping at various properties along this "Orchard Route" to sample the local wares. There's also a winery on the route: La Roche des Brises, whose whites and reds include the portlike L'été Indien (Indian Summer).
