Piopolis

Named for Pope Pius IX (1792–1878), this pretty little village on the shores of Lac Mégantic was founded in 1871 by veterans of the Papal Zouaves—volunteers from Québec parishes who went overseas to fight for the papacy and the Papal States against the forces of the Italian Risorgimento, which led to the unification of Italy. It’s still one of the most devoutly Catholic villages in Québec, and its large, beautiful church stages a series of classical concerts during the summer. Also in summer, the village offers a six-point walking tour that explores the community's unique history.
