Fodor's Review

On warm summer nights, the Old Port harbors an interesting and varied nightlife scene. But daytime is no less fun. Stroll along the riverside promenade, where merchant and cruise ships dock. The old harbor dates from the 17th century, when ships brought supplies and settlers to the new colony. It was restored for the city's 400th anniversary, in 2008. At one time this port was among the busiest on the continent: between 1797 and 1897, Québec shipyards turned out more than 2,500 ships, many of which passed the 1,000-ton mark. At the port's northern end, where the St. Charles meets the St. Lawrence, a lock protects the marina in the Louise Basin from the powerful Atlantic tides that reach this far up the St. Lawrence.

Marché du Vieux-Port. At the port's northwestern tip, farmers sell fresh produce and cheese and artisans sell their handicrafts. The market, at quai St-André, is open weekdays from 9–6 and weekends from 9–5 from spring to fall. Some stalls stay open daily

in winter, and the market is all dressed up for the Christmas season. Take a stroll through and taste some refreshing local produce, such as apples, berries and charcuterie, or try local wines and ciders. 160 Quai St-André, G1K 3Y2.
