A contemporary setting and gracious service place L'Initiale in the upper echelon of restaurants in this city, in cost as well as quality. Widely spaced tables favor intimate dining, and the warm brown-and-cream interior is cozy. But don't rush to your table. Begin your night in the lounge, where you can peruse the menu at your leisure. Chef Yvan Lebrun, considered unanimously as one of the top chefs in Québec, demonstrates remarkable precision and balance in all his dishes. The constantly changing menu follows the whims of the chef and the season. Try the foie gras or the lamb. There's also a C$129 eight-course tasting menu. For dessert, many small treats are arranged attractively on a single plate. After dinner, you can return to the lounge for your coffee.

L'Initiale could stand on its own as a great restaurant anywhere, but because it showcases many local ingredients, it is a distinctly great Quebec City restaurant. To celebrate a special occasion (or create one) my husband and I always choose L'Initiale. The dining room is formal, yet modern and comfortable--great chairs-- and the service is highly professional, yet warm and never intimidating. Dinner always offers delightful surprises. While we
leave feeling well-fed, we also float out the door on the pleasure of the experience.

We visit Quebec city once or twice a year. L'initiale has been one of our Quebec City favourites for several years now. Interesting and delicious food every time. Friendly but reserved service top notch.
