Québec City Places

Outside the Walls

Québec City may be packed with history, but if you look beyond all monuments and old buildings you'll find pockets of trendy restaurants and eclectic boutiques, and even a bit of nightlife. It's hard to miss the buzz along rue St-Jean and rue Grande-Allée, and St-Roch, fast becoming the urban heart of the city, has new high-tech businesses, artists' studios, galleries, and cafés popping up regularly.

If you're looking for an evening out, this is the place to come, as well as avenue Cartier, a well-established hot spot for bars, clubs, and pubs that are filled to the brim year-round.

If you do have a car, it's a beautiful drive on boulevard Champlain, which runs from Lower Town all around the southern edge of Québec City, following the St. Lawrence River. Above are the cliffs that lead to the Plains of Abraham, and farther on you'll see the Sillery Coves. Any one of the steep hills will take you back toward the main roads that run east-west or the highways that cross north-south: Duplessis, the farthest west; Henri IV; Du Vallon; and Dufferin-Montmorency.
