Schwartz's has no frills. The furniture's shabby, the noise level high, and the waiters are—well, brisk would be the polite word. But its cooks do such a good job of curing, smoking, and slicing (a skill in itself) beef brisket that even when it's 20 below zero you can't see through the windows because locals line up outside to get a seat at the city's most famous deli and order a sandwich thick enough to dislocate jaws. So avoid lunch and dinner hours, and when you do get in, don't ask for a menu; there isn't one. Just order a smoked meat on rye with fries and a side order of pickles—and make it snappy. Your waiter is in a hurry.

The smoked meat sandwich is definitely on par with what you'll get in a deli in New York.

As frequent travellers to New York, we wondered if a trip to Schwartz's would pay off. We went for lunch, sat at the counter and enjoyed the delicious smoked meat. (As far as atmosphere, it's a diner.) The waitstaff was friendly and efficient and steered us to the best menu option for us to share. We definitely recommend Schwartz's.
