Montreal Restaurants

Bonaparte

Bonaparte Review

Book a table in one of the front window alcoves and watch the calèches clatter by over the cobblestones as you dine. You can order à la carte—try the tuna steak or the venison—but the restaurant's best deal is the six-course tasting menu, which includes such classics as lobster bisque flavored with anise, and breast of duck cooked with maple syrup and berries. Don't be intimidated by the number of courses, because portions are generally smaller than main-menu versions. Their delivery is gently paced by one of the city's most professional staffs. Regulars and guests from afar, including Sharon Stone, AC/DC, Angelina Jolie, Madonna, and tennis star Roger Federer, are no doubt charmed by host Michael Banks, a leading tastemaker and bon vivant in the Old Port. Upstairs is a small inn.

For classic French fare, it's one of my Mtl's favourite spots: food is delicious with no fancy-ness. Couple of dishes I had there -> Tuna steak flavored with raspberry (savourish), venison (very tasty) and around 3 days ago I had also their Dover sole fillet (nicely cooked, perfectly seasoned, delicious)

Went here for lunch with my mother before seeing Ovo. What a lovely surprise. We were impressed by the excellent service and the food which was extremely flavorful and well presented.

We started with the shrimp ravioli with lobster sauce. It was sublime!

The main meal we chose was the red snapper with a Dijon mustard sauce served with a bit of wild rice, ratatouille and green beans. It was the perfect sized meal before a nice walk around Old Montreal before seeing Le Cirque du Soleil show.

The fish was cooked to perfection and the accompaniements were delicious. We loved our meal.

To top things off we had a lovely lime pie and a delicious coffee...it was perfection. The half-bottle of wine (not available everywhere) was great too and the price not too exorbitant.

Bonaparte is a lovely place to have dinner after a stroll through old Montreal. It is situated on a side street so there is no view to speak of unless you enjoy watching horse drawn carriages pass by, which I do not, but the setting is intimate, the food was delicious and the service was very personable. I certainly enjoyed celebrating my birthday at Bonapartes and highly recommend it.
