At the southern end of Place du Canada stands this 36-floor skyscraper with distinctive half-moon windows that give it a Moorish look (although some argue that it resembles a cheese grater). Those oddly shaped windows give the rooms wonderful views of Mont-Royal to the north and the St. Lawrence River to the south and east. Although the 1960s exterior seems to call out for retro decoration, the public areas, including the comfortable Bar Le Senateur, are elegant and French traditional in style. Bedrooms are cozy rather than large, with wing chairs, dark-wood furniture, brass lamps, puffy floral duvets, and small but modern marble bathrooms. Convenient underground passageways connect the hotel with the Bonaventure Métro station and Place Ville-Marie. Pros : good views and parkside location. Cons : a favorite for parties and receptions—especially with the high-school-prom crowd in the spring.
