If you're a cyclist, the Auberge de la Fontaine is an ideal place to park your bike (and yourself). Housed in two adjoining turn-of-the-20th-century residences, the hotel overlooks Parc Lafontaine and one of the city's major bicycle trails. And although it looks a little staid on the outside, the interior is what Montrealers would call branché—or just a little zany. One wall of your room might be bare brick, for example, another purple, and the ceiling might be green. But somehow it all works. Some rooms have whirlpool baths, and a few have private balconies with views of the park. A copious continental breakfast is served in the dining room, and you are free to use the little ground-floor kitchen and help yourself to snacks from the refrigerator. Pros : parkside location on a bicycle trail; some of the city's trendiest restaurants and night spots are nearby. Con : some rooms are quite small and not very well soundproofed.
