Joe Beef
Joe Beef Review
Dining at Joe Beef is a little like being invited to a dinner party by a couple of friends who just happen to be top-notch chefs. David MacMillan and Frédéric Morin were pioneers of Montréal's modern dining scene until they got tired of living on the edge and opened this little restaurant to rediscover the joy of cooking. Everything written on the chalkboard menu is simple and good, from the oysters to organic rib steak. Diners leaf through their copies of Joe Beef's new cookbook, while savoring their lobster spaghetti and rib steak. Take time to wander out back, where there's a vegetable garden, a greenhouse, a smoker, and 25 more seats. If it's full at Joe Beef, move to Liverpool House, their restaurant right next door.

What a letdown. We ordered the beef thinking that we were in for a treat. What we received was a bland hunk of leather-like meat. While our waitress was polite and helpful, the chef showed more arrogance than good sense and refused to acknowledge that he had served up a substandard meal. Symptoms of a restaurant basking in glories of the past?!?!? Too bad...we wont be going back.

We have heard about Joe Beef for the past two years and decided on our next visit to try it. So we did. It is very unpretentious. You talk to your neighbours as they are mostly friendly and the tables are 6 inches apart. Very small place. It is worth a try once.
