Staying at the Manoir Ambrose is like staying with an eccentric relative who just happens to have a couple of mansions halfway up the southern slope of Mont-Royal and just a few hundred yards from some of the best shopping in Canada. Despite its grand past, the Manoir is more homey than luxurious, like a comfortable pair of slippers. Within a few hours, manager Lucie Gagnon and her staff will have you feeling as if you've lived in the Golden Square Mile all your life. The two-room family suite is a great deal at C$150 a night. Pros : homey atmosphere and Golden Square Mile location for a fair price. Cons : parking can be very difficult.

The location is ideal. This hotel is a mixed bag. We stayed five nights this September. We had a queen bed room facing the street. The bathroom was so new, the tub still had a 'do not remove this sticker' sticker on it. The bed was good and the linens were all spotless, but the carpet was so threadbare, the pattern was worn out. The staff are as friendly as can be. The halls and common areas need a makeover. The breakfast is a writeoff. The coffee is weak, the oj is watery and the baked goods are at least two days old. I can hope that over time income will be plowed back into upgrades as evidenced by the bathroom. I would caution a friend about the shortcomings before recomending it.
