Fodor's Expert Review Izakaya Iwashi

$$ Mile End Japanese

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

This Japanese-style pub by night and café by day serves little plates to share and delicious bowls of ramen. Iwashi (which translates as sardine in Japanese) started as a pop-up café but was so popular that it quickly launched as a permantent restaurant. Dishes such as seared mackerel and friend chicken have become some of the city's best izakaya food. There are daily specials and house sake-based cocktails, like the sakerinha with sake, cucumber syrup, and lime juice. Note that Iwashi only operates as an izakaya after 6 pm; before then, the space is used as Café Sardine and serves excellent coffee and donuts.
