Port-La-Joye-Fort Amherst National Historic Site

Port-La-Joye-Fort Amherst National Historic Site Review

History buffs can delve deeper into PEI's past by driving 20 minutes west of town to the Port-La-Joye-Fort Amherst National Historic Site. Today's verdant grounds hide a tale of colonial intrigue. Ownership of the land seesawed between England and France until 1758, when the British used Fort Amherst (as they called it) as a base from which to expel Acadians. You can stroll along the wooded trails and over the original earthworks or just enjoy the panoramic views of Charlottetown Harbour. Guided 45-minute tours are given several times daily in July and August.
