Fodor's Expert Review Elmwood Heritage Inn
121 N. River Rd., Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, C1A 3K7, Canada
Tranquil and retaining its historic elegance, this 1889 inn, once the home of a provincial premier, sits at the end of a tree-lined lane in a residential neighborhood and claims, with some justification, to be the inspiration for a house described in Anne of Green Gables. Designed by architect W.C. Harris for the grandson of shipping magnate Samuel Cunard, Elmwood has been faithfully restored to reflect its Victorian pedigree. Exhibit A is the grand dining room where gourmet breakfasts are served by candlelight. Some rooms have claw-foot tubs and original working fireplaces. A second-floor common area boasts another fireplace plus a balcony, stocked guest refrigerator, and a collection of classic films.
