By Bus in Toronto

Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) buses and streetcars link with every subway station to cover all points of the city. Service is generally excellent, with buses and streetcars covering major city thoroughfares about every 10 minutes; suburban service is less frequent. Although the subway stops running at 2 AM, the bus service operates from 1 to 5:30 AM on Bloor and Yonge streets, and as far north as Steeles.

Fares & Schedules

All buses accept exact change, tickets, or tokens. Paper transfers are free; pick one up from the driver when you pay your fare (or show the driver the transfer from your subway station of origin). The single fare for buses (and streetcars and subways) is C$2.75; an all-day unlimited-use pass is C$8.50; five-fare tickets are available for C$10.50; 10 tickets or tokens are C$21.

Pay attention to the quirky rules of the day pass. It's good for unlimited travel for one person, weekdays after 9:30 AM or all day Saturday. On weekends and holidays, it's good for up to six persons (maximum two adults) for unlimited travel. If you plan to stay in Toronto for a month or longer, consider the Metropass, a photo-identity card (C$99.75 or C$76.75 for senior citizens and students) that allows unlimited rides during one calendar month.

Be sure to pick up a free Ride Guide, available in most subways. This handy guide, published annually by the TTC, shows nearly every major place of interest in the city and how to reach it by public transit. The TTC's telephone information line provides directions in 20 languages.
