Bistro 990

Bistro 990 Review

A superior kitchen is seamlessly paired with bistro informality. Start your experience with traditional pâté de maison (liver pâté partnered with quince marmalade, wine preserves, and plenty of homemade croutons). Seared east coast scallops with truffled mushroom risotto is a treat, and a roasted half chicken with herb garlic au jus crackles with crispness and Provençal flavor. Ask about the wild-game dish of the day. Faux stone walls stenciled with Jean Cocteau-esque modernist designs, sturdily upholstered chairs, and a tiled floor make the dining area sophisticated but comfortable.

I love Bistro 990 and usually try to make it my "special" meal when visiting Toronto. I always struggle with the starter selections between the Escargot, the House Pate, or splurging on the Duck Foie Gras. Strangely, the entree doesn't trouble me as much however. The Lamb Shank is out of this world and hard to pass up. There are many dessert selections but the Creme Brulee is a perfect ending along with an after dinner Chartreuse (did I mention the well stocked bar?).

Reservations here are almost essential, especially on weekends or at Film Festival time. There is a pay parking lot adjacent to the location and several hotels are within walking distance. During nicer months, there are a few outdoor tables for those seeking the true French sidewalk cafe experience but be warned Toronto can be quite windy at times.
