Relax, lemonade in hand, on the third-floor balcony overlooking a small woods after a hard day power-shopping at nearby Honest Ed's, the city's most famous discount department store, or in fashionable Yorkville. Whatever you do, this cheerful, three-story, 1910 B&B is a welcoming spot to return to. Many original fixtures remain, including oak doors and trim and large stained-glass bay windows. Two of the rooms have broadloom carpets and the third has original hardwood. Furnishings are eclectic: traditional, solid-wood dressers meet sleek, modern, Scandinavian-style closets. The family cat roams the premises. English, German, and Italian are spoken here. Pros: friendly, ethnic neighborhood, hospitable hosts, kitchenette for light snacks. Cons: Very limited space, transit or long walk to downtown core.
