This simple yet well-kept room is where Toshi caters to lovers of both raw and cooked Japanese food. The daily lunch special is an implausibly good deal (C$9.50) for warming miso and a bento box loaded with al dente green beans in luscious sesame-mirin sauce, crunchy shrimp and veg tempura, ginger-tinged green salad, proper sticky rice topped with chicken teriyaki, and happy orange wedges to finish. Don't bypass the stellar sushi lineup, including Westernized riffs like torched foie gras or buttered breadcrumb oysters, and chef specials such as tuna carpaccio and crispy flounder. The eight-seat bar at the back is where in-the-know Japanese businessmen tuck into the omakase menu.
