The Germain Group is known for beautiful, chic, upscale boutique hotels, and the Toronto model is no exception. A retro, redbrick exterior—accented by a soaring glass-and-stainless-steel frontage—works well with the historic architecture of the surrounding theater district. The dazzling lobby contains a library, a cappuccino bar, and a double-side, open-hearth fireplace. Sleek furnishings fill ultramodern rooms, which have plasma-screen televisions. Suites have separate bedrooms and living rooms, wet bars, fireplaces, and private terraces that afford superb views of the skyline. The restaurant, Luce ("light" in Italian), serves first-class cuisine. Pros: complimentary breakfast, attentive staff, laptop-sized in-room safes. Cons: spotty temperature controls, some guest rooms could use a coat of paint, haughty attitude among some staff.

We stayed here last week. We booked a "media" room where we couldn't access movies the room service menu we had inquired about before booking was not available, the lighting is oddly dark and the view of the alley didn't help anything. I felt invisible to the hotel staff in the lobby everywhere else they were great. We wouldn't go back here
