Fodor's Review

This deluxe resort along Peninsula Lake is a 780-acre, self-contained community with restaurants and lodgings to fit every budget and style, from weddings to corporate events. It hosted the G8 summit in 2010, and photos of the various world leaders are hung on walls outside meeting rooms. The flavor is largely contemporary, although the main lodge, with huge flagstone pillars, dates from 1896. The four-story-high Pavilion wing is grand, embellished with an octagonal tower

and decorative gables. The rooms vary greatly in style and features; rooms in the main building and along the lake are modern and fresh (thanks to recent renovations) while some junior suites are cozy and cabinlike. The condition and style of cottages and condos depend largely upon individual owners and renovations done, but all are well maintained. The resort is home to beautiful golf courses studded with pines and lakes, including the prestigious Deerhurst Highlands and Deerhurst Lakeside, and an on-site spa, Shizen. Sign up for all sorts of water sports or adventures on land like rock buggy tours and paintball, or visit the stables in the summer. In the winter, enjoy sleigh rides and snow tubing at the resort, or venture next door to Hidden Valley for snowboarding and skiing; the resort also arranges various Algonquin Park tours. Casual pub fare of pizza, pasta, burgers, and ribs are served at Maple restaurant; and the more upscale Eclipse serves Canadian specialties, such as pan-seared foie gras on crostini with pulled duck confit, and elk loin with Muskoka Lakes Winery wild blueberry wine reduction. Maple syrup, mushrooms, and other treats grown on the property often feature in menus.
