Fort St. Joseph

Fort St. Joseph Review

In fur-trading days Fort St. Joseph, established by the British at the southeast tip of the island, guarded the trade route from Montréal to the upper Great Lakes. Today you can wander through this National Historic Site where the fort once stood and see the outlines and a few aboveground stone ruins of the 42 building sites that have been identified. Free walking tours and a documentary-style orientation movie are offered at the visitor center, about 30 minutes by car southeast of the Gilbertson Bridge. Call ahead for directions.
