Most of Ontario's first French, English, and Loyalist settlers entered the province from the southeast. You can retrace some of their routes on southern Ontario's Heritage Highways. Highway 2, parallel to Highway 401, is smaller than the cross-Ontario freeway and more scenic. It's the original 19th-century route that linked Québec and Kingston to "Muddy York" (Toronto) in the west. With appropriate detours it provides a good glimpse into this area's attractions.
