Bread and Roses Inn

82 Victoria St., Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, B0S 1A0, Canada

This historic Queen Anne–style mansion in the heart of town retains many original architectural details, such as soaring windows and mahogany and black-walnut moldings. The house resulted from the rivalry between a doctor and a dentist: in 1880, the former built a new house and the latter, in the spirit of competition, set out to build a better one nearby, which is now the Bread and Roses. There's a fountain on the front lawn, and the garden invites strolling. Lavish breakfasts, included in the room rate, may include homemade scones and delectable quiche.
