Fodor's Expert Review Amber Rose Inn & Gallery

319 Main St., Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, B0J 2E0, Canada

Editor's Note: This location is reported to be under new ownership and therefore this review may contain inaccuracies.

The building dates from 1875 and is furnished with antiques, but you'll also find up-to-date creature comforts such as mini-refrigerators, coffeemakers, and whirlpool tubs. Part of the inn once served as a general store, and fine art by professional Nova Scotia artists is still sold in that wing. Each of the three large suites has a not-too-twee floral theme. Buffet breakfasts are equally tasteful with specialties including Sky-High Pie (spinach and cheese) or strata (asparagus and egg).

PROS

  • leafy grounds with a brook in back
  • quiet location

CONS

  • not on the water
  • off the main commercial stretch
  • two-night minimum on weekends June to Thanksgiving
