Haligonian brewers uphold beer-making traditions dating back to 1754, and you can sample the results at this pub in what was once the house of William Alexander Henry, a prominent Canadian politician. Henry House serves five unpasteurized English-style ales crafted by Halifax's own Granite Brewery, plus special blends like Black Velvet (though cider is mixed with the stout here, rather than the usual champagne). The food is impressive, too—especially the fishcakes and
homemade bread pudding. Best of all, the kitchen stays open late (until midnight from Thursday through Saturday, and until 10 on other nights). In winter fireplaces keep the ironstone building toasty, and in summer a tiered patio provides both access to the afternoon sun and shelter from the wind.
