Arichat

Arichat is the principal village on Isle Madame: the largest island in a 44-square-km (17-square-mile) archipelago of the same name, which sits at Cape Breton’s southernmost tip. Known for its friendly Acadian culture and many secluded coves and inlets, Arichat has a deep harbor that made it an important fishing, shipbuilding, and trading center during the 19th century. Some fine old buildings from that period still remain. The two cannons overlooking the harbor were installed after John Paul Jones sacked the village during the American Revolution.
