Sports and the Outdoors

The Margaree has two fishing seasons: the early-summer run, which opens annually on June 1, and the fall run, from mid-September through October, which coincides with the peak foliage period. Salmon-fishing licenses cost about C$62 per week for anglers who don't live in Nova Scotia. In Margaree, they're available from LeBlanc's Store, Ingraham's Irving & Convenience Store, and the Big Intervale Fishing Lodge. Before planning a fishing trip, check the latest catch-and-release regulations, imposed in 2015 amid concerns about declining stocks in Margaree and other rivers.

Margaree Salmon Association. The association is heavily involved in salmon conservation and habitat restoration, and has put together a pamphlet, available on its website, outlining Margaree River fishing etiquette. In addition to the fishing advice, the pamphlet lists the names and contact information of guides who know the river well and can help you catch that trophy-size salmon. The guides typically charge C$175–C$200 per day. Margaree Harbour, Nova Scotia. 902/248–2059; 902/248–2578; www.margareesalmon.org.
