Sports and the Outdoors

On whale-watch cruises departing from Chéticamp’s government wharf, you can see minkes, humpbacks, and finbacks in their natural environment.

Captain Zodiac Whale Cruise. The operators of these cruises aboard Zodiac vessels are so confident you'll spot a whale—finbacks, humpbacks, minkes, and pilots are the ones most sighted—that they'll refund your money if you don't. They also offer "soft-in-water" snorkeling with the whales—where you enter the water quietly and calmly float on the surface so as not to disturb or alarm the whales. If you're lucky, they'll swim up to take a look at you. Trips take place daily from early July through late August. Chéticamp, Nova Scotia. 877/232–2522; www.novascotiawhales.com. Whale-watching C$59; snorkeling with whales C$95, includes wet suit and snorkeling equipment.
